Sometimes the best thing you can do for your hair is give it a break.

Between wigs, braids, ponytails and other styles, your hair and scalp can easily go through a lot of pulling, brushing and manipulation. Giving your hair some attention between styles can make your routine much easier in the long run.

Start with gentle handling. Avoid pulling tightly when detangling, especially around the hairline. Work through knots gradually rather than forcing a comb or brush through them.

Keep your scalp clean and comfortable. If you regularly wear protective styles, don’t ignore your scalp simply because your hair is tucked away. Your scalp is still part of your hair-care routine.

Moisture is important too. Depending on your hair type and routine, a suitable moisturising product or nourishing oil can help keep your hair feeling softer and easier to manage.

Pay attention to your edges. They’re often the first place to show signs of too much tension. Constantly wearing very tight styles can put unnecessary stress on delicate areas, so switching up your hairstyles can help.

Night-time care can also make a difference. A satin or silk bonnet, scarf or pillowcase can reduce friction while you sleep and help your hair stay neater.

Most importantly, give your hair a chance to rest. Protective styling is useful, but protective styling doesn’t mean leaving your hair completely unattended.

Your hair still needs care underneath the style.
